Pawlie to release ‘Ffoadur’ — his first Welsh-language album.

Flying Meatloaf Records is proud to announce ‘Ffoadur’ — the first Welsh-language album by Pawlie, a singer-songwriter (and Welsh speaker) in Santa Barbara, California.

‘Ffoadur’ (which means “Refugee” in English) releases on Xxx XX, 202X — on CD, vinyl, downloads, and streaming. There will be two single releases: TBD (TBD) and TBD (TBD). ‘Ffoadur’ will be Pawlie’s fifth album, following up on his first Welsh-language single in 2024.

“Ffoadur is the next step in my Welsh-language journey and personal growth,” says Pawlie.

The concept

‘Ffoadur’ has eight songs built around the theme of feeling like a stranger in your own country. Of the album’s theme, Pawlie says: “I live in America, so it’s no surprise where my inspiration came from — nor the passion and sarcasm of some of the songs!”

But there are also autobiographical elements woven in. Pawlie explains, “The ‘Ffoadur’ concept came to me during a period of self-reflection. I was looking at my life, the horrible situation in America, family and friends, and the future. I started to notice the same patterns in each one...”

The songs

‘Ffoadur’ explores alienation — both internal and external. While ‘Y Celwydd Mawr,’ ‘Mistar Neb,’ and ‘Americanwr Balch (Acwstig)’ are full of sarcastic social commentary, this is only half of the story. Songs like ‘Yn fy Mreuddwyd,’ ‘Cerdded i Ffwrdd,’ and ‘Yr Un Hen Fi’ deal with loneliness, uncertainty, introspection, and (ultimately) acceptance. “Hopefully listeners will relate to the contrast between the darkness and the light,” says Pawlie.

The production

Main tracks were recorded at Stiwdio Sain in North Wales, with a dream-team from the Welsh music scene: Osian Huw Williams (Candelas) on drums and backing vocals, and Aled Wyn Hughes (Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog) on ​​bass guitar — who produced and engineered the sessions. The Sain sessions also included Euron Jones (pedal steel guitar), Will Pound (harmonica, accordion), and Mei Emrys (vocals, electric guitar) who sings a duet with Pawlie on ‘Pilipalod.’

Back in Santa Barbara, Pawlie completed the guitars and vocals, while Angus Cooke (Woodburning Project) added cello on two songs. Speaking of strings, ‘Americanwr Balch (Acoustic)’ is a special version of the 2024 single with one guitar, one voice, and a string quartet. The exceptional string arrangement was created by Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck).

‘Ffoadur’ was mixed by Thom Flowers (Steve Perry, The Ataris) at Hi-Volt Sound in Santa Barbara, and mastered in Wales by Gethin John at Hafod Mastering in Cowbridge. The vinyl master was cut by Jason Mitchell at LOUD Mastering in Taunton, Somerset (TBC).

Ffoadur’s striking album artwork was painted by Sabro Foster in Southern California.

Artist bio

After growing up in England, Pawlie moved to America with his family at the age of ten. He strummed his first guitar at age 13, and the rest is history. His music draws on influences from rock, pop, jazz, folk, and more. Pawlie started learning Welsh in 2022.

To celebrate the release of ‘Ffoadur’ Pawlie will be performing a series of acoustic gigs across Wales in the spring of 2027.
